Men and Women of full age, without any limitations due to race, nationality or religion, have the right to marry and to found a family.... The family is the natural and fundamental group unit of society.... - Universal Declaration of Human Rights - Article 16 Infertility is a challenge a couple probably never expects. Facing this problem and its treatment can be emotionally frustrating and exhausting, and can put a strain on even the best of relationships. It is natural to feel discouraged and confused by the problem, however there are good reasons to be optimistic. In most instances, highly skilled professionals can find the source of the problem and provide appropriate solutions to help overcome it. Assisted Reproductive Technology Center (ARTC) is the infertility wing of Women's Center. Women's Center has been providing comprehensive solutions for the entire spectrum of infertility related problems over the last twenty years. Its staff along with its extensive and dedicated infrastructure makes it the best set-up center in South India. Assisted Reproductive Technology is an area of medicine, which has achieved enormous success and importance in the last two decades. In order to achieve success in this field, the availability of highly focused and dedicated laboratory setups are essential. With the objective of setting up a center of excellence for the management of infertility, the Assisted Reproductive Technology Center was conceptualized in 1994. Prof. S. S. Ratnam and his team from National University Hospital of Singapore, who started the first and most successful unit in Asia, were involved in the infrastructure planning of the laboratory. The formal inauguration of the Center was in December 1994, in the presence of several national and international luminaries such as Dr. Mehroo Hansotia from Bombay and Dr. Paul Devroy from Belgium. The Center achieved another important milestone in 1999, with the introduction of micro-manipulation and ICSI techniques. Senior embryologists from Sydney and National University Hospital, Singapore were on hand to train our embryologists. Today, our embryologists are able to achieve world-class results on their own. We reported the first blastocyst pregnancy in India and several other national and regional firsts. Currently, Dr Mirudhubashini Govindarajan, who is an elected member of prestigious international societies such as American Society of Reproductive Medicine and European Society for Humane Reproduction and Embryology, heads the unit. It employs scientific personnel who have received their formal training and qualification at International centers and are members of Alpha International society. Professional managers with international experience direct the Center. We have several systems in place to maintain the quality of the laboratory and services. In the year 2001, in the continuing quest for excellence Dr. David Mortimer, the former scientific director of Sydney IVF and presently the president and co-owner of Oozoa Biomedical Inc., was invited to provide a critical external quality assessment of the unit. Since then we have had other independent consultants certify the Center’s laboratory. In 2002, the laboratory was granted India’s first ISO 9001:2000 for IVF laboratories. The Center continues to conduct audits of its facilities to ensure that we can provide the highest possible quality of services. With this dedication, the Center continues to bring joy into the lives of numerous couples. |
